Which Ice Bath Is Right For Me? A Complete Buyer's Guide

Cold therapy has moved from professional sports facilities into home wellness — and the technology has moved with it.
A few years ago, an ice bath meant a bathtub, a bag of ice, and a significant amount of willpower. Today, purpose-built home ice baths maintain precise temperatures automatically, filter and circulate water continuously, and are designed to be used daily without the effort or cost of buying ice.
This guide explains the key differences between ice bath types, what to look for, and how to choose the right model for how you\'ll actually use it. If you\'d prefer a conversation first, WhatsApp our team — we\'re happy to talk it through.
What Is Cold Water Therapy?
Cold water immersion — submersing the body in water typically between 10–15°C — has become one of the most widely adopted recovery and wellbeing practices outside professional sport. The physiological response to cold immersion includes vasoconstriction followed by vasodilation as the body warms, changes in heart rate and breathing, and the release of noradrenaline.
Regular cold immersion is used by athletes for post-training recovery, by wellness practitioners as a daily resilience and mental clarity practice, and by contrast therapy enthusiasts who pair it with heat — sauna, hot tub, or steam — for a more complete physiological effect.
We do not make medical claims about cold water therapy. What we can say is that it is one of the most consistently reported wellbeing practices among people who use it regularly — and that the experience of the first plunge is something you never quite forget.
The Key Difference: Chilled vs Non-Chilled
This is the most important decision when choosing an ice bath for home use.
Non-Chilled (Cold Fill)
The tub is filled with cold water — either from the tap or with ice added. Temperature depends entirely on your water supply and ambient conditions. In a UK summer, mains water temperature can reach 18–20°C, which is less effective for serious cold therapy. In winter, it may be cold enough without any intervention.
Non-chilled models are lower in cost and simpler in design. They work well for users who plunge first thing in the morning before the water has had time to warm, or who don\'t need precise temperature control.
Chilled (Active Cooling System)
A built-in chiller unit maintains the water at a precise target temperature regardless of ambient conditions — typically settable between 4°C and 20°C. You set the temperature the evening before, and the water is exactly where you want it when you\'re ready to use it.
For daily users who want consistency and control, a chilled system is significantly more practical than filling with ice or relying on cold tap water. The higher upfront cost is offset by the convenience and the elimination of ongoing ice costs.
The Onyx Range — Our Ice Bath Collection
Our ice bath range is built around the Onyx family — selected for build quality, hygiene specification, ease of ownership, and long-term reliability. Here\'s how the range breaks down:
Onyx Pulse — From £4,499
Entry point to active-chilled cold therapy. The Pulse combines accessible pricing with a proper chiller system — the right starting point for those who want precise temperature control without the full specification of premium models.
Onyx Gold — £5,499
A step up in build quality and specification. The Gold delivers a more refined ownership experience, with improved materials and finish. Popular with daily users who want the cold therapy practice to feel as considered as the rest of their wellness routine.
Onyx Platinum — £7,499
Premium specification throughout. The Platinum is designed for serious daily use — higher-grade chiller, superior insulation, and the build quality to match.
Onyx PlatinumPro — £9,999
The top of the range. Maximum chilling capacity, full stainless specification, and a filtration and sanitation system designed for regular high-frequency use. The choice for performance athletes and committed daily practitioners who want the best.

What Temperature Should I Aim For?
This depends on your experience level and your goal.
- 15–20°C — Cool, not cold. A sensible starting point for beginners. Still produces a physiological response but is more accessible.
- 10–15°C — The most commonly recommended range for regular cold therapy. Cold enough to be challenging, practical enough for daily use.
- Below 10°C — Used by experienced practitioners and athletes seeking maximum stimulus. Requires acclimatisation. Not recommended as a starting point.
Our team will advise on appropriate starting temperatures and protocols for your specific goals and experience level.
Hygiene and Water Maintenance
This is a practical consideration that\'s easy to overlook when you\'re excited about the cold therapy benefits. Ice bath water needs to be kept clean — particularly for daily users.
All models in our Onyx range include filtration systems to keep the water clear and hygienic between uses. Higher-specification models include active sanitisation. The alternative — frequent full water changes — is both wasteful and inconvenient for a product designed to be used daily.
Space and Installation
Ice baths are more compact than hot tubs and swim spas, but you still need to think carefully about placement.
- Indoors: Utility rooms, garages, gym spaces and pool rooms all work well. Consider drainage — you\'ll need to empty the tub periodically — and ventilation for models with active chiller units.
- Outdoors: Garden placement is possible but consider weather protection for the chiller unit and, particularly in winter, whether you want to be stepping outside in cold air before getting into cold water (some people welcome this as part of the practice; others prefer the convenience of indoor access).
We survey every installation before delivery and advise on placement and drainage requirements. Nothing is assumed — we\'ll confirm everything is achievable before you commit.
Contrast Therapy: Combining Heat and Cold
One of the most effective wellness protocols available at home is contrast therapy — alternating between heat and cold immersion. A sauna session followed by a cold plunge, repeated two or three times, creates a powerful combination of physiological effects.
If you\'re considering both a sauna and an ice bath, they work exceptionally well together as a combined installation. We design and install complete wellness spaces combining multiple products — see our wellness spaces guide for more detail, or book a consultation to discuss your specific space.
